When traveling, its important to make sure you pack all the essentials. Things like shampoo, soap, toothpaste, clean clothes, etc. One thing that can get overlooked however is the invisible suitcase of crucial qualities that is needed for every trip!
What am I talking about, you may ask? I'm talking about things like bravery, creativity, patience, humility, and curiosity. These things make every trip worth it, and filled with memories and experience. Every adventure is different, but these traits make a good traveler!
Bravery- You have to be brave when you travel otherwise, you'll always go to the same places and do the same things! Its fun to have a vacation "spot" but don't limit yourself to just one National Park or one beach. Be bold and brave and try somewhere new, even if its just a new restaurant or experience.
Creativity- When you take photos, use public transportation, find places to relax or shop... get creative! Be sure to take more than one shot of something, maybe from a different angle or one with the family in front of the monument and then one with just the monument. Sometimes I'll visit a place and totally be a tourist and when I get home I'm a bit bummed because I didn't snap any creative shots. You can also be creative with transportation. Try renting a car, taking an Uber, using the subway or train, or riding the ferry! Don't be afraid to submerge yourself in that areas culture.
Patience- Have patience with others, with yourself, and with your plans. Sometimes things don't work out exactly like you plan. People are late, the weather is different, your feet hurt, or there's a language barrier. Don't stress. Sometimes these things can make for the most memorable adventures! Have patience.
Humility- You don't know everything. You might get lost and its ok to ask for directions! You might forget sunscreen or bug spray; its okay to borrow from your travel buddy. Not only is humility a good trait to possess in the day to day, but it will make your travel experiences all the richer because you'll open yourself up to learn from people and you'll experience and respect other cultures and lifestyles. Let yourself be small for a bit so you can see how big and beautiful the world is!
Curiosity- The last and, in my opinion, most important item to pack is curiosity. Don't be afraid to ask questions. Why are things done this way? Where can I learn more? Who invented or created this piece of art, machinery, invention, or way of living? How can I learn from you? How can you learn from me? If you want to have a memorable time, you need this quality. Learn all you can about the people, the food, the history of where you're visiting and it will mean so much more!
