There is nothing I dislike more than forced self-expression.
Okay, maybe that’s an exaggeration. I don’t like a lot of things: EDM, Green Tea, when people pronounce it “exspecially.” But as a creative there is a deep loathing that comes when I’m forced to be creative at a time or in a place where I feel no motivation to do so. It’s like pulling teeth, and even worse, it’s like pulling teeth when I’m supposed to be a dentist.
I want to be creative. I need to be creative. My job, my lifestyle, and my sanity all depend on it. So what do you do when the creativity just isn’t flowing out of you?
- Let Yourself Be Inspired. The best way to keep that desire to be more creative in you is to look at others being creative. There is literally no time that I want to write a novel more than when I’m surrounded by amazing fiction book covers in Barnes and Noble. Put yourself in situations that make you want to share your talent and your passions. It’s unbelievable how motivated you feel when you see what others have created.
Give Yourself Time and Space To Create. This is the one I personally have the most problem making happen, but it might be the most crucial part of staying motivated. In order to stay creative, you have to make time for your creativity. Giving yourself time and space to work on your craft every day takes motivation in itself, but when you do, it makes all the difference in your motivation to keep going.
Enjoy Your Creativity. There are so many times that I find myself dreading being creative, which might be the most ridiculous logic to ever exist. If you're a creative, you should find joy in your work. This is what you do- it's who you are! And that means there was a time when it was all you wanted to do. So let yourself enjoy it! You're passionate, you're talented, and you're making it happen. Having the right mindset about your creativity is the key to making it great. Look at it as a privilege - because it is one.
Creativity is fueled by passion. You can't be creative without being passionate, and staying motivated lies in where your passion lives. So don't let your passion for your creativity slip. Be intentional about what you do and why you do it. Use your knack for self-expression as a tool to better yourself. This is what we were called to do- don't take it for granted.
Now I have to go take my own advice.
