We are starting an Earth Day challenge, and we hope you join us! For one month, we will be making small changes to reduce the amount of plastic that we use.
Did you know that over 60 billion disposable coffee cups are used each year? Although they are made mostly from paper, they are lined with plastic that keeps your coffee warm, but also keeps the cup from being able to be recycled. You can also bring a reusable travel mug to most cafes and ask for your coffee or latte to be put in there rather than a to-go cup. If you’re like me, you waste a lot of disposable coffee cups! What if you could limit your disposable coffee cups a few times a month, or a few times a week?
Did you know that half a billion straws are used every single day? This is an easy one to cut down on! Buy a stainless steel or glass straw and carry it in your purse or backpack so you’re always ready. If you ever forget yours, just ask for no straw. It was awkward to ask my waiter this the first few times, but it’s gotten more natural and one time, I even convinced my whole table to do the same! I’m happily surprised by how many restaurants are already phasing out straws.
What about plastic water bottles? Use a reusable bottle instead! Many cafés have water available for fill ups throughout the day!
What about plastic bags from stores? If you’re only buying a few things, ask for no bag and use your hands. If you’re buying more than a few things, bring a canvas bag!
Other easy things to do to cut down on waste –
Use cloth napkins
Bring reusable utensils to work with you
Freeze things in glass jars or containers
For the next month, starting today, post the simple changes you are making to reduce the amount of plastic you use. Even if you only make a few changes, it’s better than nothing! Post on social media with the hashtag #omcplasticfree and we can cheer each other on as we make changes together! We’ll be sharing your plastic free posts on our stories.
