Today we're chatting with Alisa Wismer, of Alisa Wismer Designs. She is based right outside of Philadelphia and makes the cutest and most whimsical illustrations! You may have seen some of her work at our Small Business Owners Dinner (photo booth props) or in our shop (cards at Christmas time and "Pop, Fizz, Clink" coasters). Get to know more about her and her art in this interview!
Oakmoss: What is your business name and where are you located?
OM: What are three words you would use to describe you/your business?
A: Quirky, bright, whimsical
OM: How long have you been in business?
A: I've been doing freelance since I was still in school, but "professionally" for only 2 years!
OM: Is this something you've always wanted to do and how do your talents/passions play a part in your business?
A: I never wanted to be a graphic designer– ever. Then I found myself loving the design + business combination, and the rest is history!
OM: That's so awesome! What is one of the biggest challenges you've had to face running your business and how did you overcome it?
A: One of the biggest challenges in creating and running a small business has been getting the word out and building a client base, but that's part of being a new small business!
OM: It can definitely be hard to build a client base and reach new people! How do you stay motivated to keep creating and building a better business/experience for clients?
A: I'm inspired and motivated by the awesome things other people are doing, and by things that make me stop and think "How can I do something like that?" I always want to create something unique and awesome that will also appeal to the people.
OM: What is one of your favorite products/events/experiences that your business has to offer?
A: I started venturing out into getting products other than cards made, specifically enamel pins, and they've been a big hit so far!
OM: What is one piece of advice you'd give entrepreneurs just starting out?
A: Don't give up even when you think you've put in too much time, money, sanity– nothing worth having ever comes easy, so keep on keeping on, it'll be great!
