We are so excited to chat with Missy today! She's sharing her art and all about her fiber business with Oakmoss Collective. We love getting connected with our creative community!
1. Describe your business and what you create.
Hello, I am Missy from Hollow & Hive Handmade! I love all things fiber art. I love weaving and knitting, but my main focus in embroidery. I create mixed-media embroidery pieces that include either paint, or found objects in nature. I have a thing with textiles, so it is great to be able to work with those mediums daily!
2. How long have you been creating and designing?
Art has always been a big thing for me, I have been making ever since I was a little kid. I did a little bit of everything and I was extremely encouraged to indulge my creative spirit from my family as I was growing up. I studied art in college, where I had a focus on photography, but I tried to add fiber to my projects whenever I could. Art, as well as craft, has always been a constant and an ever growing force in my life.
3. What is one of your favorite sources for inspiration?
I love to pull inspiration from the natural world around me. I love to walk through our woods and find leaves for new projects, or just to get fresh air and think. As far as finding inspiration and connecting with fellow artist, I love to look at Instagram! Instagram has become a great tool for sharing my own work, as well as finding a community of artists who are striving to make everyday.
4. What advice can you give to someone wanting to start their own creative business?
Keep at it! When I first graduated from the university I tried to start my creative business a few times, but stopped early in the process. Don't get discouraged if you don't have a large audience in the beginning. First focus on your craft and really try to pour your best into it. Sometimes it can feel like you are making art for no one to see, but you just have to keep making.
5. Where do you hope to be in 5 years?
I do still have a part-time job, so in 5 years I would love to be able to be creating full time.
6. Describe your perfect day :)
My perfect day is all about the simple, quiet moments. A day where I sleep in. When sunlight pours into the kitchen as the the kettle heats on the stove. Giving my cat morning cuddles. Sips of hot coffee and sketching preliminary work at my desk. Finding a good playlist or an audio book. Having an art concept in mind and seeing it come to life just as I had imagined it. A walk in our woods. Kisses from my sweetheart, watching the sunset with colors of purple, orange, and pink. Repeat, repeat, repeat.
