Amidst the hustle and the bustle of today's society with everyone rushing to work and trying to get things done and never taking time to appreciate the little things, you find those gems. Today I had the opportunity to interview a good friend and a member of our Creative Team, Jessica. She shares with us the process behind her growing business Flowers By Jess and the ways she implements nature into her everyday life.
Oakmoss: What inspired you to get involved with floral arrangements?
Jessica: I’ve always loved creating and making things, from art to cooking. It just seemed kind of natural to get involved with floral arrangements. It’s like mixing art with nature, two things that I love the most.
OM: Where did you learn how to arrange flowers? What got you started?
Jessica: I’ve always loved flowers in general, but last summer, my friend and I went to a floral arrangement workshop. We spent the day in the shade of her backyard trees, drinking lemonade, eating the best foods, and talking flowers. It looked like something straight from Pinterest. I learned so much, and fell in love. Since then I’ve been asked by my university to make the centerpieces for several events (my first event was to design 40 centerpieces by 11am!) and I’ve also been in charge of floral decorations for several parties.
OM: What are your favorite types of flowers to arrange in the springtime?
Jessica: I love mixing flowers. If you look at any of my arrangements, you’ll see probably five different types of flowers that all go together. My absolute favorite is to add asters to almost any centerpiece. They look like tiny daisies, no bigger than a quarter. It’s a more springtime version of what you would use baby’s breath for!
OM: What does nature mean to you and what are some of your favorite ways to implement it into your lifestyle?
Jessica: I love nature. Almost every day in the summertime, I’m outside, taking walks, hiking, picnicking, or lying a blanket in the grass and reading all day. Winter is the worst for me, because I’m stuck inside. I just love being outside, it doesn’t really matter what I’m doing. There’s just something about being outside, surrounded by beauty, that lifts your spirits.
OM: What flower do you think accurately describes your personality?
Jessica: Wildflowers. Any kind of wildflower. My favorite arrangement will always be a bouquet of freshly picked wildflowers. Happy, free, and blooming in the summertime.
